Probably no one expected after such dramatic and – for his period – controversial works as Elektra and Salome that Richard Strauss would produce a comic opera interlaced with the rhythms of Viennese waltz. The libretto by Strauss court collaborator Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who was freely inspired by the works of the gentlemen Louvet de Couvrai and Molière, features an amusing plot about an elderly Baron named Ochs who wants to marry a young, rich girl; his plans are foiled by the fact that his chosen Sophie falls in love with a certain Octavian after he gives her a ceremonial silver rose in the Baron´s name. Its classification as a comic opera may be misleading, however: the intertwining of the layers of Viennese society in the middle of the 18th century is a source of many humorous situations but the work also features aspects which are less funny and more concerned with the human condition. These mainly arise in connection with the character of the ageing marshal – the desire to be young and the fear of growing old, infidelity, and selflessness in love.

Nach so dramatischen und zu ihrer Zeit kontroversen Werken wie Elektra und Salome hätte von Richard Strauss wohl kaum jemand eine komische Oper im Rhythmus des Wiener Walzers erwartet. Doch kann die Kategorisierung als komische Oper auch in die Irre führen, da das an Werke von Louvet de Couvray und Molière angelehnte Libretto aus der  Feder von Hugo von Hofmannsthal, mit dem Strauss lange Jahre zusammenarbeitete, weit mehr in sich birgt als nur das komische Sujet des ältlichen Barons Ochs, der eine junge, vermögende Dame heiraten möchte, dessen Plan jedoch daran scheitert, dass sich seine Auserwählte Sophie in Octavian verliebt, der nur dazu bestellt war, ihr im Namen des Barons zeremoniell eine silberne Rose zu überbringen. Das Gewirr der verschiedenen Gesellschaftsschichten im Wien des 18. Jahrhunderts führt zwar zu einer Reihe von humorvollen Situationen, doch ließen beide Autoren vor allem durch die Figur der alternden Feldmarschallin in das Werk auch weniger komische, dafür aber umso menschlichere Themen einfließen – die Sehsucht nach Jugend und die Angst vor dem Altern, Untreue, Selbstlosigkeit in der Liebe.

Čas to je zvláštní věc, ten přece nemění věci. Stárnoucí maršálka má mladého milence Octaviána, ale ví, že takové lásky netrvají věčně. Netuší však, že když Octaviána pošle jako družbu se stříbrnou růží, sama přivodí konec jejich vztahu.

Řadit Straussova Růžového kavalíra mezi komické opery může být zavádějící, protože se v libretu jeho dvorního spolupracovníka Hugo von Hofmannsthala, skrývá mnohem víc než jen komická zápletka o křupanském baronovi Ochsovi, který si chce vzít mladou, bohatou dívku a plány mu překazí fakt, že se ona vyvolená Sophie zamiluje do Octaviána, jenž jí jen baronovým jménem předává ceremoniální stříbrnou růži. Propletenec sociálních vrstev vídeňské společnosti poloviny 18. století je sice zdrojem řady humorných situ­ací, ale především skrze postavu stárnoucí maršálky vložili oba autoři do díla i témata již méně komická, ale o to více lidská – touha po mládí a strach ze stárnutí, nevěra, nezištnost v lásce.
