The Bird Seller

For a Viennese operetta the composer Carl Zeller and his authors have chosen an almost exotic location: the Rhine Palatinate in the early 18th century at the time of the electors.
The bird dealer Adam from Tyrol would love to marry Christel from the post office, but he is too poor for that. Therefore Christel would like to ask the elector for the vacant position of the menagerie director for her Adam. She does not notice that in the intimate pavilion she is not meeting the elector himself, but Count Stanislaus, who poses as such. When Adam found out about the alleged tête-à-tête with the elector, who was notorious as a womanizer, he renounced Christel in his jealousy and directly courted the peasant girl Marie. But this is now none other than the disguised Electress who wants to find out about her unfaithful husband. -
As it should be in a good operetta, in the end all the confusions of love dissolve in good pleasure - and of course the bird dealer and the postwoman become a couple!
Carl Zeller's “The Bird Dealer” - premiered in Vienna in 1891 - is one of the great titles of the classic operetta era and is still one of the pillars of the repertoire today.
The composer was actually a civil servant in the Austrian Ministry of Education, and music was initially a part-time hobby. With his masterpiece “The Bird Trader” he has succeeded in creating an operetta full of charm and wit, which is characterized by an impressive wealth of melodies, sometimes in a folk tone, then again in representative ensembles. Titles such as “Happy Palatinate, Gott erhalt's”, “Griaß enk Gott, all together”, “Do you give yourself roses in Tyrol”, “I am Christel from the Post” or the parodic “I am the vice dean” are popular Evergreens of the genus have become.
