Director Christof Loy takes on the gloomy fairytale world of Béla Bartók and combines two of the composer's key symbolic works. The pantomime is about an enigmatic mandarin who seems immortal and can only be defeated by true love. In the second part of the evening, Judith gradually gets closer to the secret of her future husband, Duke Bluebeard, and discovers the horrible truth about his past. In Bartók's famous and only opera, Christof Fischesser and Evelyn Herlitzius play the dark couple. Ivor Bolton, chief conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, is conducting an opera performance at Theater Basel for the first time.
