Fidèle au nom qu’il s’est donné, le Concert des Nations et son maître catalan Jordi Savall font résonner en un même programme des accents français, espagnol, italien, allemand et même irlandais.

Le peu de choses que nous connaissons du brillant compositeur espagnol Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, décédé de la tuberculose quelques jours avant son vingtième anniversaire, nous le devons à François-Joseph Fétis, qui fut son professeur d’harmonie et de contrepoint, et dont Arriaga fut l’assistant au Conservatoire de Paris, autour de 1823. À la même époque, le jeune Hector délaisse ses études de médecine et fréquente de plus en plus l’Opéra et la bibliothèque du Conservatoire ; on se laisserait à rêver que les deux jeunes hommes ont pu se croiser au hasard d’un opéra ou d’un concert…
L’étonnante Sinfonía a gran orquesta d’Arriaga, composée à 17 ans seulement, nous fait prendre la mesure de son talent et imaginer la carrière qu’il aurait pu embrasser.

Mendelssohn est lui aussi encore un tout jeune homme de 21 ans quand il commence la composition de la Symphonie italienne en 1830 à Rome, où il s’est lié d’amitié avec Berlioz. Dès les premières mesures, Mendelssohn nous transporte dans une atmosphère joyeuse et lumineuse qui culmine avec le tourbillon endiablé du saltarello final.

Deux mélodies de Berlioz accompagnent ce diptyque symphonique. La Belle voyageuse tout d’abord et tout en douceur, à la manière d’une mélodie populaire, est inspirée d’un texte du poète irlandais Thomas Moore. Pièce de caractère avec partie de castagnettes obligée, empruntant au boléro, Zaïde évoque à merveille la patrie d’Arriaga.

True to the name it gave itself, the Concert des Nations and its Catalan master Jordi Savall resonate in the same program French, Spanish, Italian, German and even Irish accents.

The little that we know of the brilliant Spanish composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, who died of tuberculosis a few days before his twentieth birthday, we owe to François-Joseph Fétis, who was his teacher of harmony and counterpoint, and to whom Arriaga was the assistant at the Paris Conservatory, around 1823. At the same time, the young Hector abandoned his medical studies and frequented more and more the Opera and the library of the Conservatory;
we would let ourselves dream that the two young men might have crossed paths by chance at an opera or a concert... talent and imagine the career he could have embraced.

Mendelssohn was also still a very young man of 21 when he began composing the Italian Symphony in 1830 in Rome, where he befriended Berlioz. From the first bars, Mendelssohn transports us into a joyful and luminous atmosphere which culminates with the frenzied whirlwind of the final saltarello.

Two melodies by Berlioz accompany this symphonic diptych. La Belle voyageuse first of all and very gently, like a popular melody, is inspired by a text by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. Character piece with obligatory part of castanets, borrowing from the bolero, Zaïde wonderfully evokes the homeland of Arriaga.
