Die Gespräche der Karmeliterinnen • Theater Krefeld Mönchengladbach

On July 17, 1794, 16 nuns of the Carmelite order of Compiègne were executed by guillotine. They had previously been expelled from their monastery and arrested during the French Revolution because they did not want to give up their order and their faith. The viewer experiences the story from the perspective of the noblewoman Blanche, who had sought refuge in the convent and followed the path of the nuns to their bitter end.

In 1957, the French composer Francis Poulenc set this moving story about clinging to one's own convictions and the fear of death to poetic and powerful music. It is captivatingly direct and extraordinarily expressive in its orchestral timbres.
