France at the time of the French Revolution: A time of massive social change, in which the struggle for freedom, equality and fraternity as well as secularization did not remain without victims. Even the Compiègne monastery near Paris, a retreat for young nobles, no longer offers protection. Blanche de la Force, who suffers from anxiety, had hoped to find peace here, but overcomes her fears only when faced with real need. The premiere in 1957 at La Scala in Milan was a resounding success. The devout Catholic Francis Poulenc processed an event in his work that actually happened in July 1794. At that time a group of Carmelite nuns were guillotined to death while singing. In 1906 they were beatified as martyrs. From this, Poulenc created an opera that resisted the premises of the musical avant-garde of his time and was more oriented towards the great romantic compositions of the 19th century. Human emotions such as fears, mental oppression and the longing for salvation are described in intimate, dazzling colors and, last but not least, the horrors of a revolution are reflected. The opera is being staged by the French director Richard Brunel, and opera stars such as Laura Tatulescu, Heidi Brunner, Marianne Eklöf and Betsy Horne, who most recently inspired audiences in Klagenfurt in Der Rosenkavalier and Die Csárdásfürstin , are on the stage . We would like to point out that Cheryl Studer is ill and therefore unfortunately cannot take on the role of Madame de Croissy. The role will be sung by the Swedish soprano Marianne Eklöf.
