DIARY OF A DISAPPEARED: Concert Various

Created in 1921, the Journal of a Disappeared retraces, in 22 songs, the story of Janik, a young villager who, defying the prohibitions, breaks with his own, undoes his prejudices and abandons everything to follow Zefka, a Gypsy with whom he is madly in love. At time of composing this work, Leoš Janácek falls in love with a young woman, Kamila Stosslova. Ivo van Hove transposes nowadays Janácek's tale. Janik is no longer a peasant but a renowned photographer who fell in love with his model. the show is enriched with the composer's love letters to his muse Kamila. Also, the score was completed by the Belgian composer Annelies van Parys, the piano remaining the central instrument.

Staging this work seemed very natural to me, as much this realistic language, almost bastard, is that of a theater of life. I am of course started from the score but also immersed myself of the intense correspondence exchanged by Janácek with Kamila, and I added a contemporary reflection, the music of Annelies Van Parys. It's the whole of these components which makes it possible to give a resonance today with a history marked by the European spirit from the beginning of the last century. Ivo van Hove

A composition by Annelies Van Parys can be found here mixed with that of the Czech composer in order to "break the rapidity of the rhythm of the piece" by "highlighting highlights the timbre of women's voices". An addition that fits perfectly into the ensemble performed by the expert hands of the pianist Lada Valešová who manages to agree throughout the evening with the voice from the stage, accompanying them and carrying them same as she does with the score.
