What makes a good operetta? A romantic (love) story, lots of bankruptcies, bad luck and mishaps, wonderful melodies that stay in your ears for a long time, and the dream that - at least on stage - everything will be fine in the end. This is how the famous 1930 film became a hit in a country that had been shaken by an economic crisis and was on the verge of the abyss. The Nazis banned the film and many of those involved fled into exile - but that dream has lost none of its appeal to this day.
