While one unscrupulously earns his money from the misery of the poorest of the poor, the other cultivates an almost old-fashioned mix of robbery and murder: Jonathan Peachum runs the lucrative agency "Beggar's Friend", in which he pitifully equips beggars. For this he collects half of their income. Macheath, on the other hand, mostly indulges in idleness in the brothel and relies entirely on his relationships with the London police chief. Since both see the Soho neighborhood as their turf, conflict between the rivals is inevitable. When Peachum involuntarily becomes Macheath's father-in-law, the situation escalates.

Bertolt Brecht's The Threepenny Opera, which premiered in 1928, is one of the most frequently performed plays of the 20th century. In his music, Kurt Weill created an unmistakable mix of styles from the fashionable dances of the late 1920s. Songs like "The Moritat von Mackie Messer" or the ballad of "Pirate Jenny" still have an impact today. The Dresden State Operetta presents "The Threepenny Opera" in the tradition of the premiere, in which the operetta tenor Harald Paulsen sang Macheath. Due to the cast of singers, Kurt Weill's music in its melodic diversity moves more than usual into the center of the performance. The work can be heard in the tonally refined original instrumentation by Weill, which is more opulent than usual.
