“It's champagne's fault, tralalalala” - this is what the protagonists in Johann Strauss' FLEDERMAUS agree on after a night of drinking full of mix-ups and erotic slips. But it is not only the alcohol that is to blame, the intrigue of the humiliated Dr. Falke, who was once exposed to the ridicule of small-town society in a bat costume and now uses his chance to get revenge on his 'good friend', the bon vivant Gabriel von Eisenstein. And so the maid as an actress, the wife as a Hungarian countess and Eisenstein himself as a French marquis are masked and sent to Prince Orlofsky's ball. The fact that this is followed by Katzenjammer in prison in the early morning is less due to the champagne than to the nature of things. With his FLEDERMAUS, Johann Strauss succeeded in creating the prototype of the Viennese operetta - impregnated with waltzes, obsessed with polka and full of bitter irony. Inspired by Offenbach's Opéras bouffes from Paris, the bourgeois salon audience was relentlessly held up a mirror - and some spectators recognized themselves in the abstruse game of saplings on stage.
