Excessive celebrations, erotic games, mix-ups and a secret conspiracy in the background: "Die Fledermaus" is considered the queen of operetta and has been firmly anchored in Austria's cultural identity since its premiere like hardly any other work.

Actually, Gabriel von Eisenstein should be in prison, but he prefers to have fun at Prince Orlofsky's boozy masked ball. The confusion about meeting his maid Adele at the party, who is appearing under a false identity, is quickly dissipated when an unknown beauty appears. Von Eisenstein is blown away and doesn't realize that the supposed stranger is actually his wife Rosalinde. Without knowing it, he has long since become the victim of a nasty revenge plan, the final point of which is only to be revealed after the end of the ball. From the intoxication of the night there is a sudden awakening the next morning.

In the “Fledermaus” the bourgeois daytime world is contrasted with the free-spirited nocturnal goings-on and the absurdity of the social code of conduct is exposed. With the waltz and polka melodies that are indispensable for the operetta, the frenzy of the masked ball – true to the motto “Champagne has it to blame” – is driven further and further until the facade of the apparently civilized society falls.

 "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss (1825-1899) is considered the highlight of the golden age of operettas. Since then it has not only been part of the standard repertoire in Austria. Based on a comedy by the grand masters of French operetta, Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, Karl Haffner and Richard Genée have created a sparkling comedy with a false bottom.

Alexandra Liedtke, who has already staged at the Salzburg Festival, the Burgtheater and the Vienna State Opera, stages Strauss's masterpiece at the Salzburg State Theater. The music director of the house, Leslie Suganandarajah, makes the swinging operetta a top priority
