“That sounds to the ear and trickles through the blood down to the legs, and the laziest person in the auditorium starts involuntarily nodding his head and rocking his body and kicking his feet. You can now get the most beautiful seasicknesses in a box in the Theater an der Wien, so it waves on the ground floor under the enchanting tones that Johann Strauss whirls with his staff from the orchestra, ”wrote the Morgenpost about Strauss' strudel from waltz and Gallop on the occasion of the triumphant bat premiere on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1874 in the Theater an der Wien.

Rosalinde succumbs to the tenoral sounds of Alfred, her husband Gabriel von Eisenstein thirsts for the ballet rats, the housemaid Adele dreams of a career as a diva, the prison director Frank converts to the French chevalier, his assistant Frog drowns the last spark of reason in Slivovitz, Prince Orlofsky hopes for himself Dispersion and Dr. Falke delights in his revenge - in one night everyone succumbs to the sensual temptations. When it comes to gambling, flirting, drinking and dancing, inhibitions fall to general fraternization and sisterhood: "For eternity, always like today, if we still think about it tomorrow!" But who is to blame? The champagne, of course!

Strauss liked the cryptic joke of this story so much that he completed the score in just 42 days. The following sensational and worldwide breakthrough made the bat the ultimate in Viennese operetta. In the Theater an der Wien alone, the work was performed 49 times in the first 65 days after its premiere; to date there have been a total of 445 performances. In the summer of 2010, the tireless, night owl bat will return to the Theater an der Wien and thus to the location of its premiere; in a direction concept that refers back to the spiritus rector of this opera house: to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his Così fan tutte .
