The peace of Eisenstein's bourgeois home rests on his head tonight. The husband is in court because he slapped someone..., meanwhile the wife's old suitor, Alfréd, the singer, appears... and Adél, the housekeeper, is invited to a shield ball with Prince Orlovszky. The icing on the cake is the arrival of Falke, who mocked the Bat: he is also preparing to visit Orlovszky and would bring his old friend Eisenstein with him. They decide: instead of prison, the ball comes first, and he enters the cell only at dawn. Rosalinda also lets Adél go to the fictional "sick aunt" so that she can be alone with Alfréd, but Frank, the prison director, steps in to take Eisenstein away. Since she believes Alfréd is the husband, she takes the innocent singer with her. Adél appears at the ball, dressed as her boss's wife, then as the French Marquis Eisenstein, and Frank, the prison director, also disguised as a French nobleman, stumbles in. then also a mysterious Hungarian countess, who is none other than the disguised, masked wife, Rosalinda. The evening becomes more and more chaotic until dawn comes and Eisenstein sets out to occupy his cell. In the prison, where the slightly drunk jailer Frosch is trying to discipline Alfred who has grown out of himself, the guests of the ball meet again and it turns out that it was all "Bat's revenge" and the champagne is to blame for everything...

Eisenstein polgári otthonának békéje ma este a feje tetején áll. A férj épp a bíróságon, mert felpofozott valakit..., közben feltűnik a feleség régi udvarlója, Alfréd, az énekes.... Adél, a házvezetőnő pedig meghívást kap egy pajzán bálba Orlovszky herceghez. A hab a tortán a Denevérnek gúnyolt Falke érkezése: ő is Orlovszkyhoz készül, és magával vinné régi barátját, Eisensteint. Döntenek: börtön helyett előbb a bál, s csak hajnalban vonul be a zárkába. Rosalinda elengedi Adélt is a kitalált „beteg nagynénihez”, hogy egyedül maradhasson Alfréddal, de betoppan Frank, a fogházigazgató, hogy elvigye Eisensteint. Mivel Alfrédról hiszi, hogy ő a férj, magával viszi az ártatlan énekművészt. Megjelenik a bálban Adél, főnökasszonya ruhájában, majd Eisenstein francia márkiként, betoppan Frank, a börtönigazgató ugyancsak francia nemesnek álcázva magát, majd egy titokzatos magyar grófné is, aki nem más, mint az álruhás, álarcos feleség, Rosalinda. Az este egyre kaotikusabbá válik, mígnem eljön a hajnal, és Eisenstein elindul elfoglalni celláját. A börtönben, ahol az enyhén ittas börtönőr, Frosch próbálja fegyelmezni a magából kikelt Alfrédot, a bál vendégei újra összetalálkoznak és kiderül, hogy mindez a „Denevér bosszúja” volt, és mindenért a pezsgő okolható…
