The emperor has hunted down a white gazelle in the forest, which transforms into a beautiful human woman before his eyes. He makes her his empress and from then on is a wild lover by night and a fanatical hunter by day. But love has a deadline, because the empress is the daughter of the powerful spirit king Keikobad, who has put a curse on the connection: If the empress does not succeed after a year in casting a human shadow, that is, in being fertile like humans and to become a mother, the emperor must petrify alive and the empress return to her father's realm. An unearthly force separates the couple, who at that moment realize their love for one another. The empress, on the other hand, finds herself in front of a temple in which she sees the almost petrified emperor. The water of life appears before her and a voice promises her the shadow of the dyer and the salvation of the emperor if she drinks. But the empress is now almost human herself and feels sorry for the human couple. She resists temptation and does not drink. The fourth collaboration between Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss is one of the most fantastic and profound in operatic literature. It comes at a time that shows Europe on the brink of the First World War and is to become decisive for a whole century. Der Kaiser hat im Wald eine weiße Gazelle erjagt, die sich vor seinen Augen in eine wunderschöne Menschenfrau verwandelt. Er macht sie zu seiner Kaiserin und ist fortan des Nachts ein ungestümer Liebender und am Tag ein fanatischer Jäger. Doch der Liebe ist eine Frist gesetzt, denn die Kaiserin ist die Tochter des mächtigen Geisterkönigs Keikobad, der der Verbindung einen Fluch eingegeben hat: Wenn es der Kaiserin nach Ablauf eines Jahres nicht gelingt, einen menschlichen Schatten zu werfen, das heißt, fruchtbar zu sein wie die Menschen und Mutter zu werden, muss der Kaiser lebendig versteinern und die Kaiserin ins Reich ihres Vaters zurückkehren. Als die Kaiserin von diesem Fluch erfährt, ist der Kaiser zu einer mehrtägigen Jagd aufgebrochen und ihr bleiben nur noch drei Tage, das Unheil abzuwenden. In ihrer Verzweiflung bittet sie ihre Amme, ihr den notwendigen Schatten zu verschaffen. Die Amme führt die Kaiserin in die Behausung des gutmütigen Färbers Barack und seiner unzufriedenen Frau. Die Färberin verweigert sich dem Mann, dem sie verheiratet wurde und will keine Kinder bekommen. Die Amme versucht sie durch schmeichelhafte Versprechen dazu zu verführen, ihren Schatten herzugeben. Doch der menschliche Instinkt hält die verzweifelte Frau vor dieser Tat zurück. Als die Auseinandersetzungen mit ihrem Mann schließlich den Höhepunkt erreichen und die Färberin vorgibt, den Ehemann betrogen und ihre Fruchtbarkeit verkauft zu haben, erhebt der erzürnte Barack das Schwert gegen sie.
Eine überirdische Macht trennt das Paar, das in diesem Augenblick seine Liebe zueinander erkennt. Die Kaiserin dagegen findet sich vor einem Tempel wieder, in dem sie den schon beinah versteinerten Kaiser erblickt. Vor ihr erscheint das Wasser des Lebens und eine Stimme verheißt ihr den Schatten der Färberin und die Erlösung des Kaisers, wenn sie trinke. Doch die Kaiserin ist nun selbst beinah ein Mensch und fühlt Mitleid mit dem Menschenpaar. Sie widersteht der Versuchung und trinkt nicht. Die vierte Zusammenarbeit von Hugo von Hofmannsthal und Richard Strauss gehört zum Fantastischsten und Tiefgründigsten der Opernliteratur. Sie fällt in eine Zeit, die Europa am Abgrund des Ersten Weltkrieges zeigt und entscheidend für ein ganzes Jahrhundert werden sollte. Bereits 1911 beschäftigte sich Hofmannsthal mit diesem „Zaubermärchen“, das sowohl in den Märchen aus Tausend und einer Nacht als auch in der „Zauberflöte“ seine Wurzeln hat und gibt ihm doch einen neuen Sinn, der deutlich unter dem Eindruck der Zeit steht: ein lähmendes Grauen in der unsichtbaren Figur des Geisterkönigs Keikobad, die kriegerische Getriebenheit des Kaisers und die Angst der Kaiserin davor, ein Mensch zu sein und als solcher zu bestehen. Richard Strauss schreibt zu diesem Epos eine überirdisch schöne Musik, die den Meister der Romantischen Musik auf dem Höhepunkt seines Könnens zeigt. In den Wirren des Ersten Weltkriegs vollendet, wurde es erst 1919 in Wien uraufgeführt und verblüfft in seiner Deutungsvielfalt bis heute.
