Die Frau ohne Schatten
Richard Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten gehört zu den grossen Stückherausforderungen des Opernrepertoires. Das Werk erfordert einen riesigen Orchesterapparat, und gleich fünf dramatische Hauptpartien sind zu besetzen. In unserer Wiederaufnahme singt mit Evelyn Herlitzius, eine grosse Strauss- und Wagnerinterpretin, die anspruchsvolle Rolle der Färberin. Mit Emily Magee und Roberto Saccà sind auch die Partien der Kaiserin und des Kaisers mit hochkarätigen und in Zürich bestens bekannten Künstlern besetzt. Die musikalische Leitung dieser Wiederaufnahme übernimmt Peter Tilling, der im Jahr 2009 bereits zwei Vorstellungen dieser Produktion dirigiert hat. Der Regisseur David Pountney liest diese geheimisvolle Märchenoper, die Strauss und Hugo von Hofmannsthal während des Ersten Weltkriegs schrieben, als eine «Studie über vier Figuren auf der Suche nach ihrem Menschsein».

Seit sie den Menschenkaiser geheiratet hat, gehört die Tochter des Geisterkönigs Keikobad weder dem Geisterreich noch der Welt der Menschen an, denn sie wirft keinen Schatten. Um ganz Mensch zu werden, steigt sie mit Hilfe der Amme zur Erde hinab. Dort will sie der Färberin, die mit ihrem Mann Barak in ärmlichen Verhältnissen lebt, den Schatten abkaufen...

The woman without a shadow
Richard Strauss' The Woman Without a Shadowis one of the greatest challenges in the operatic repertoire. The work requires a huge orchestra, and five main dramatic roles have to be cast. In our revival, Evelyn Herlitzius, a great interpreter of Strauss and Wagner, sings the demanding role of the dyer. With Emily Magee and Roberto Saccà, the roles of Empress and Emperor are also cast by top-class artists who are well known in Zurich. The musical director of this revival is Peter Tilling, who conducted two performances of this production in 2009. Director David Pountney reads this mysterious fairy tale opera, written by Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal during World War I, as a "study in four characters in search of their humanity".

Ever since she married the human emperor, the daughter of the spirit king Keikobad has belonged neither to the spirit realm nor to the human world, for she casts no shadow. In order to become fully human, she descends to earth with the help of the wet nurse. There she wants to buy the shade from the dyer, who lives in poor circumstances with her husband Barak...
