L'amour de loin

The libretto of »L'amour de loin« is based on the story of Jaufré Rudel, a 12th-century troubadour and Prince of Blaye. Jaufré's poetry is commonly associated with the theme of "love from afar", in which the real desire for love is fulfilled by the misplacement of the loved and at the same time idealized Person in the unattainability experiences a special form of sublimation.

The action, set in alternation between occident and orient, takes place in medieval Aquitaine, in Tripoli and on the sea. Troubadour Jaufré Rudel, sobered by the superficiality of a life of pleasure, has set a new form of love as his ideal: longing love for a distant, unknown lover, whose virtues he extols in his songs. Not being able to be sure whether the woman he praised actually exists, and accepting that he may never be able to experience the fulfillment of his longing, seems to him the highest form of love in his life situation. When a foreign traveler posing as a 'pilgrim' claims to have actually met the woman of Jaufré's songs in distant Tripoli, Jaufré's desire begins to be directed towards this unknown woman in the distance: she is Clémence, a young noblewoman who has lived in Tripoli since childhood and is praised there for her virtue. Informed by the pilgrim that she is being celebrated in the songs of the Aquitanian troubadour, Clémence begins to focus her thoughts and feelings on this distant lover. However, she shies away from meeting Jaufré - on the one hand because she doubts whether she is actually worthy of his great admiration, on the other hand because she fears disappointment and suffering.
