DIE LUSTIGEN WEIBER VON WINDSOR I Staatsoper Unter den Linden

Deutsche Romantik und italienischer Charme – und dazu ein Komödienstoff des großen Shakespeare: all das hat Otto Nicolai zu seiner »komisch-phantastischen« Oper inspiriert. Wie die »Lustigen Weiber von Windsor« den selbstgefälligen Ritter Sir John Falstaff, der seine besten Tage schon merklich hinter sich hat, buchstäblich an der Nase herumführen, ist ein Kabinettstück musikalischer Charakterisierungskunst.

Im März 1849 an der Hofoper Unter den Linden erstmals auf die Bühne gebracht, avancierte das Werk des Berliner Hofkapellmeisters Nicolai rasch zu einem Favoritstück des Repertoires. Mozarts Geist und Mendelssohns Esprit sind ebenso spürbar wie der Belcanto südlicher Prägung, Energie, Spielwitz und theatralische Komik. Textlich wie musikalisch gewinnen die Figuren individuelles Profil, während die buffoneske, mitunter hakenschlagende Handlung ein Übriges hinzutut, einschließlich der unterschiedlichen atmosphärischen Tönung der einzelnen Szenen mit ihren Tag- und Nachtseiten. Viele Jahre stand dieses lebenssprühende Werk, eine musikalische Komödie im besten Sinne, nicht mehr auf dem Spielplan der Staatsoper – jetzt kehrt die Oper mit ihrer inspirierten Musik an den Ort ihrer Uraufführung zurück.

German romanticism and Italian charm – plus a comedy from the great Shakespeare: all of this inspired Otto Nicolai to create his »funny-fantastic« opera. How the »Merry Wives of Windsor« literally lead the smug knight Sir John Falstaff, who is well past his best days, by the nose is a showpiece of the art of musical characterization.

First staged in March 1849 at the Court Opera Unter den Linden, the work by the Berlin Court Kapellmeister Nicolai quickly became a favorite in the repertoire. Mozart's spirit and Mendelssohn's esprit are just as palpable as the bel canto of southern influence, energy, playfulness and theatrical comedy. Both lyrically and musically, the characters gain an individual profile, while the buffonesque, sometimes twisting action adds the rest, including the different atmospheric tones of the individual scenes with their day and night sides. For many years this vibrant work, a musical comedy in the best sense of the word, was no longer on the Staatsoper's repertoire - now the opera is returning with its inspired music to the place of its premiere.
