From the 2006 Salzburg Festival: "Apollo et Hyacinthus/The Duty of the First Commandment" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Musical direction: Josef Wallnig - Staging: John Dew. On May 13, 1767, Mozart's first opera "Apollo et Hyacinthus" celebrated its premiere in the auditorium of the University of Salzburg. At that time it was customary for high school students to stage a Latin drama at the end of the school year, including the tragedy "Clementia Croesi" by the Benedictine Father Rufinus Widl. As an intermediary to this piece, Mozart, then eleven years old, created Apollo, whose scenes were played before the prologue and between the acts of the spoken drama. "The Duty of the First Commandment" is the collaborative work of three composers; the first part is by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the other two by Michael Haydn and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser. Only Mozart's composition has survived to this day. The plot brings naive images and allegorical figures to the stage. The powers of the world and of eternity strive for the soul of man. The Christ Spirit depicts the horrors of death and eternal damnation in order to convert man to repentance. But mercy and justice leave man free choice. The human being then moves out into the realm of the world spirit. There he will fail and then return ruefully - but that's what the missing passages by the other composers are about.
