Cologne Opera THE BIRDS by Walter Braunfels | Trailer

Ratefreund and Hoffegut, two art-loving citizens from a big city, are looking for a retreat from the unreasonable demands of restless civilization in the kingdom of birds. Immediately after their arrival, the guessing friend, a man of action and a strategist, offers the feathered creatures an ideally tempting and at the same time politicalexplosive plan: the construction of a well-fortified city, called ›cloud cuckoo land‹, is to be combined with the founding of a new kingdom for the birds, which is dedicated to the ›fine arts‹ on the one hand, but at the same time gives them dominion over people and the gods secures. After initial hesitation, the birds let themselves be convinced of the ambitious idea and, finally seized by a veritable frenzy of enthusiasm, they also ignore the warnings of Prometheus, who had once been chastised by Zeus, the father of the gods. The thunderstorm of the gods is not long in coming for the bird world, and the artistically gigantic project ›Cloud Cuckoo Land‹ ends in war and destruction. For better or for worse, the two visitors from the big city are returning to where they came from.
