DIE WALKÜRE - Richard Wagner - Stadttheater Klagenfurt

People in a bitter struggle between archaic social structures and the unrestrained urge for freedom. A resigned god who denies himself, his work and his power - and yet tries to create a being who can save his existence. But can an independent, free human redeem the debt of the gods?

Wagner's great tetralogy tells the story of the world as a cycle of beginnings and ends, of life, love and failure of mankind, of creation, destruction and new creation. In the new Klagenfurter Ring , the powerful story begins with the Valkyrie, which among the works of the tetralogy has always been the public's favourite. It tells the story of Wotan's descendants, who are supposed to secure the power of the father of the gods. A pair of twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde, seems born for it: the brother ends up at his enemy's stove, years later finds his sister there and wins her heart. Everything goes according to plan - and yet the sibling love breaks the law. The father must sacrifice the son. Brünnhilde, favorite daughter, defies her father for the first time and protects the incestuous couple in vain.

With the Valkyrie as the beginning, the Klagenfurt viewers* do not get into the action in the mythical past, which presents the Rheingold and thus already reveals the end of the parable at the beginning, but in the metaphorically understood present time of the people. This makes it particularly clear that the ring is only superficially set in a fantastic world of gods, heroes and magical beings. Above all, he reflects universal social structures and questions the relationship between man and nature - putting one of the most pressing issues of the present and near future up for discussion.
