In order to stop Alberich's striving for power, Wotan, the father of the gods, fathered nine Valkyries who are supposed to gather an army of fallen heroes for him in Valhalla. His son Siegmund, born out of a connection with a human woman, is supposed to win back the ring as a freeborn hero. But unknowingly and against Wotan's plans, Siegmund falls in love with his twin sister Sieglinde and fathers Siegfried with her. When Wotan's favorite daughter Brünnhilde, out of pity, defies her father's order to abandon Siegmund to destruction, he banishes her to a rock of fire from which only the strongest hero can save her. This will be Siegfried.
