The young and brilliant director Géraldine Martineau and François-Xavier Roth make us rediscover two rare masterpieces by Bizet and Saint-Saëns
In the 19th and 20th centuries , many musicians fantasized about a more or less realistic Orient. Like many others, Bizet and Saint-Saëns yielded to this exotic appeal and delivered their version of it. La Princesse jaune , by Saint-Saëns and Djamileh by Bizet, were premiered the same year at the Opéra Comique in Paris, and the two librettos are by Louis Gallet.

Although a great traveler, Saint-Saëns never went to Japan. The Yellow Princess mixes dream and reality. In Holland, Léna tries to bring her lover back to reality. The latter fantasizes about a painting representing a Japanese woman.

Djamileh takes us to Cairo in the harem of Prince Haroun tired of his favorite Djamileh. She will do anything to win him back.

This opera was, among others, one of the favorite works of Gustav Mahler who programmed it many times at the Staatsoper in Vienna.

For these performances, Les Siècles replays French instruments from the middle of the 19th century , restoring their original colors to these forgotten masterpieces.
