Für diese Inszenierung wurde Stefan Herheim vom renommierten Fachmagazin "Opernwelt" zum "Regisseur des Jahres 2007" gewählt. Von den überregionalen Medien hochgelobt, entwickelte sich das Werk auch zum Publikumsrenner. Der Mythos von Don Juan entstammt einer volkstümlichen Legende, die Ereignisse in einem der Klöster Sevillas tradiert. Mehrere dramatische Ausgestaltungen, u. a. von Molina, Molière und Goldoni, gehen der Zusammenarbeit von Lorenzo da Ponte und Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart an ihrem heiteren Drama "Don Giovanni" (UA 1787) voraus.

Die 2065 von Leporello katalogisierten Opfer des Liebesgottes belegen akribisch, dass Don Giovannis erotischer Genussdrang eine fast religiös absolute Dimension besitzt. Dabei gibt Giovanni den Wunsch nach Freiheit – "Viva la libertà!" – seiner Feier-Gemeinde als Gebetsparole vor. In „Objekte der Begierde“ kommt der Surrealist Luis Buñuel dieser fatalen Verknüpfung von Liebessehnsucht und Erlösungsreligion nahe: "Heute steht es, wenn es stimmt, was mir erzählt wird, mit der Liebe wie mit dem Glauben an Gott. Sie scheint zu verschwinden, jedenfalls in bestimmten Gesellschaftsschichten. Man betrachtet sie gern als ein historisches Phänomen, als eine kulturelle Illusion. Man studiert sie, man analysiert sie, und wenn möglich, heilt man sie." Diese Heilssuche des Gottes der Liebe, nach göttlicher Liebe und für einen liebenden Gott wurde auf den Tag genau am 251. Geburtstag Mozarts in Essen aufgeführt.

For this production, Stefan Herheim was voted "Director of the Year 2007" by the renowned specialist magazine "Opernwelt". Highly praised by the national media, the work also developed into a hit with the public. The myth of Don Juan comes from a popular legend that passed on events in one of the monasteries in Seville. Several dramatic performances, including by Molina, Molière and Goldoni, precede Lorenzo da Ponte and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's collaboration on their cheerful drama "Don Giovanni" (premiered 1787).

The victims of the God of Love, cataloged by Leporello in 2065, meticulously prove that Don Giovanni's erotic urge to enjoy has an almost religious dimension. Giovanni gives the desire for freedom - "Viva la libertà!" - to his celebration community as a prayer slogan. In “Objects of Desire” the surrealist Luis Buñuel comes close to this fatal link between longing for love and the religion of salvation: "Today, if what I am told is true, it is both love and belief in God. It seems to be disappearing, at least in certain classes of society. They tend to view them as a historical phenomenon, a cultural illusion.
