I have often thought that if, by some strange quirk of fate, I should live out the rest of my life on a desert island, like a modern Robinson, without the slightest chance of being rescued, I wonder what I would take with me. Surely many books, many DVDs and CDs, and - although this is impossible - many paintings and sculptures.
Among the CD and DVD recordings, Mozart's Don Giovanni would certainly be there. I didn't even think about whether it would be among the first and most listened to and watched recordings, but it would simply be, like air, water, days and nights, the change of seasons, like sunshine, and the moon turns everything into silver painterly brilliance.
 
There are few composers who did not throw unnecessary notes on sheet music. Mozart is certainly one of them. That is why he was able to create his most wonderful masterpiece in the history of music and opera literature, Don Giovanni, in which masterpiece the eternal magic, the most important essence of all arts, the elevating and inexplicable wonder, and such perfect proportions as we can see while admiring Leonardo's Madonna of the Rocks. These proportions - even if they can be measured - provide a framework for the masterpieces of geniuses bearing the fingerprint of God, whether in Mozart or Leonardo.

Sokszor gondoltam arra, ha a sors valami furcsa fintora miatt az életem hátralévő idejét egy lakatlan szigeten, modern Robinson módjára kellene élnem, mégis a legcsekélyebb esély nélkül arra, hogy megmenthessenek, vajon mit vinnék magammal. Biztos, hogy sok könyvet, sok DVD és CD lemezt, és – bár ez lehetetlen – sok festményt és szobrot.
A CD és DVD felvételek között bizonyosan ott lenne Mozart Don Giovannija. Nem is törtem a fejem azon, hogy az első és legtöbbet hallgatott, nézett felvételek között lenne-e, hanem egyszerűen csak lenne, mint a levegő, a víz, a nappalok és éjszakák, az évszakok váltakozása, mint a napsütés, s a hold mindent ezüstre festő ragyogása.
 
Kevés olyan zeneszerző van, aki nem vetett kottapapírra felesleges hangjegyet. Mozart bizonyosan közéjük tartozik. Ezért alkothatta meg ő, a zenetörténet, az operairodalom, legcsodálatosabb, remekművét, a Don Giovannit, mely remekműben az örök varázslatot, minden művészetek legfontosabb lényegét a felemelő és megmagyarázhatatlan csodát, s az oly tökéletes arányokat, mint amilyeneket Leonardo Sziklás Madonnáját csodálva láthatunk. Ezek az arányok - még ha mérhetők is - akár Mozartnál, akár Leonardonál az Isten ujjlenyomatát magukon viselő zsenik remekműveinek adnak keretet.
