Genesis

 

After only nine performances, Le Nozze di Figaro is withdrawn from the Viennese poster. However, the immense success of its revival several months in Prague sharpens the desire of Mozart and Da Ponte.

 

The latter also boasted to Emperor Joseph II of being able to write three librettos at the same time, one for Salieri, the other for Martini and the third for Mozart. Faced with the Emperor's skepticism, Da Ponte replied: “I want to try the experiment. I will write for Mozart at night while reading a few pages of Dante's Inferno; in the morning for Martini, reading Petrarch, and in the afternoon for Salieri with the help of Tasso”.

 

Da Ponte continues in his Memoirs a rather funny account of the two months devoted to the writing of these librettos: “I returned home and set to work. I sat down at my desk around midnight: a bottle of excellent tokay wine on my right, a sachet of Seville tobacco on my left, my writing desk in front of me. At the time lived at my house with her mother a young and beautiful person who took care of the household. She came into my room when I called her, ringing a bell. I would have preferred to love her only as my daughter, but alas! I must say that I abused the doorbell especially when I was cold… In the first day that I spent between Tokay, tobacco, the bell on my table and my beautiful muse I wrote the first two scenes of Don Giovanni … In sixty three days,

 

Was Molière (Dom Juan or the Stone Feast – 1665) the inspiration for Da Ponte and Mozart for Don Giovanni as Beaumarchais was for Le Nozze di Figaro? If we are certain that Mozart knew the works of Molière and was not insensitive to the widespread social criticism in his Don Juan, the myth attributed to Tirso de Molina (El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de piedra - 1627) was already popular and had already inspired several authors. These include Thomas Shadwell's play (The Libertine – 1676) with musical interludes by H. Purcell, C. Goldoni's play (Don Giovanni Tenorio – 1736), Gluck's ballet (Don Juan, ou le Festin de Pierre – 1761).

 

In reality it is the opera of G. Gazzaniga on the libretto of G. Bertati (Il convitato di pietra – 1782) which will provide Mozart and Da Ponte the starting frame even if they borrow from Molière and Goldoni other traits for their characters.

 

Contrary to legend, it was in Vienna, during the months of July and August 1787, that Mozart composed almost entirely his Don Giovanni. On October 4th the Mozarts return to Prague where the rehearsals of Don Giovanni have started.  

 

After two successive postponements, the opera is finally performed for the first time on October 29 at the National Theater in Prague. G.N0. Nissen (biographer and second husband of Constanze Mozart) will tell how the day before the performance Mozart wrote down the Overture to his Don Giovanni, which he had probably already composed in his head.

 

The creation in Prague was immediately a huge success and will remain on the bill of many performances.

 

In Vienna, where Mozart has returned, the Prague success of his Don Giovanni has reached the ears of the Emperor, who is eager to see it. The first took place on May 7, 1788 in the absence of Joseph II, but he was far from winning over the enthusiasm of the Viennese. The reception is cold: some critics consider the subject unworthy, and for a majority of musicians in the imperial capital the composition is considered too difficult for singing.

 

We will leave the final word to Da Ponte and Mozart:

“Don Juan had no success! Which did not prevent the Emperor from saying: the opera is divine; and may be even more beautiful than Figaro, but it is not a dish for my Viennese. I repeated the thing to Mozart who answered me without being disconcerted: let them have time to chew it” (in Memoirs of Da Ponte)

Après seulement neuf représentations Le Nozze di Figaro sont retirées de l’affiche viennoise. Toutefois l’immense succès de sa reprise plusieurs mois à Prague aiguise l’envie de Mozart et Da Ponte.

 

Ce dernier se vante d’ailleurs auprès de l’Empereur Joseph II, de pouvoir écrire trois livrets en même temps l’un pour Salieri, l’autre pour Martini et le troisième pour Mozart. Devant le scepticisme de l’Empereur, Da Ponte répond : «Je veux tenter l’expérience. J’écrirai pour Mozart la nuit en lisant quelques pages de l’Enfer de Dante ; le matin pour Martini, en lisant Pétrarque, et l’après midi pour Salieri avec l’aide de Tasse ».

 

Da Ponte poursuit dans ses Mémoires un récit assez drôle des deux mois consacrés  à l’écriture de ces livrets : « Je rentrai chez moi et me mis à l’ouvrage. Je m’asseyais à ma table de travail vers l’heure de minuit : une bouteille d’excellent vin de tokay à ma droite, un sachet de tabac de Séville à ma gauche, mon écritoire devant moi. A l’époque habitait chez moi avec sa mère une jeune et belle personne qui s’occupait du ménage. Elle entrait dans ma chambre quand je l’appelais en agitant une clochette. J’aurais préféré ne l’aimer que comme ma fille mais hélas ! Je dois dire que j’abusais de la sonnette surtout lorsque j’avais froid… Dans la première journée que je passai entre le Tokay, le tabac, la sonnette sur ma table et ma belle muse j’écrivis les deux premières scènes de Don Giovanni… En soixante trois jours, les livrets pour Mozart et Martini étaient terminés et j’avais composé plus des deux tiers du livret pour Salieri… »

 

Molière (Dom Juan ou le Festin de pierre – 1665) a t-il été l’inspirateur de Da Ponte et de Mozart pour Don Giovanni comme Beaumarchais le fut pour Le Nozze di Figaro ? Si on est certain que Mozart connaissait les œuvres de Molière et n’était pas insensible à la critique sociale diffuse dans son Don Juan, le mythe attribué à Tirso de Molina (El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de piedra - 1627) était déjà populaire et avait déjà inspiré plusieurs auteurs. On citera notamment la pièce de Thomas Shadwell (The Libertine – 1676) avec des intermèdes musicaux de H. Purcell, la pièce de C. Goldoni (Don Giovanni Tenorio – 1736), le ballet de Gluck (Don Juan, ou le Festin de Pierre – 1761).

 

En réalité c’est l’opéra de G. Gazzaniga sur le livret de G. Bertati (Il convitato di pietra – 1782) qui fournira à Mozart et Da Ponte la trame de départ même s’ils empruntent à Molière et Goldoni d’autres traits pour leurs personnages.

 

Contrairement à la légende, c’est à Vienne, au cours des mois de juillet et d’août 1787 que Mozart compose presque entièrement son Don Giovanni. Le 4 Octobre les Mozart reviennent à Prague où les répétitions de Don Giovanni ont commencé.  

 

Après deux reports successifs, l’opéra est enfin représenté pour la première fois le 29 octobre au Théâtre national de Prague. G.N0. Nissen (biographe et second époux de Constanze Mozart) racontera comment la veille de la représentation Mozart couche sur le papier l’Ouverture de son Don Giovanni qu’il a probablement déjà composée dans sa tête.

 

La création à Prague connaît immédiatement un immense succès et restera à l’affiche de nombreuses représentations.

 

A Vienne où Mozart est revenu, le succès praguois de son Don Giovanni est parvenu aux oreilles de l’Empereur qui est avide de le voir. La première a lieu le 7 mai 1788 en l’absence de Joseph II mais il est loin d’emporter l’enthousiasme des viennois. L’accueil est froid : certains critiques jugent le sujet indigne, et pour une majorité de musiciens de la capitale impériale la composition est jugée trop difficile pour le chant.

 

Nous laisserons le mot de la fin à Da Ponte et à Mozart :

« Don Juan n’eut aucun succès ! Ce qui n’empêcha pas l’empereur de dire : l’opéra est divin ; et peut être encore plus beau que Figaro, mais ce n’est pas un plat pour mes Viennois. Je répétai la chose à Mozart qui me répondit sans se déconcerter : laissons-leur le temps de la mâcher » (in Mémoires de Da Ponte)
