The wealthy DON PASQUALE may be well over seventy, but he has not yet received the blessing of wisdom. On the one hand, he would like to know that his legacy is in good hands, but on the other hand, he is not averse to really going overboard again, in other words: getting involved with a young woman.

And so he becomes the willing victim of a sophisticated intrigue. The young lovers Norina and Ernesto cannot marry due to sheer financial difficulties. With the help of Pasquale's doctor, Doctor Malatesta, it teaches the rich old curmudgeon and voluptuary Pasquale a lesson.
Donizetti has based his opera on the somewhat worn theme of 'old man loves young woman', but despite all the hustle and bustle, he has succeeded in creating a profound comedy about human fallibility. And the Oldenburg staging leaves nothing to be desired: from (old) male fitness mania, to female shoe ticks to dinner-for-one allusions - rarely has this comedy been seen so turbulent.
