Don Pasquale, over seventy, wealthy and of old nobility, wants to be sure that his inheritance falls into good hands. He would also love to feel youthful again with a young woman by his side! Clumsily, however, he places his fate in the hands of a questionable "doctor" - and thus becomes the perfect victim of a tricky intrigue with far-reaching consequences...

The popular buffo opera, which Donizetti wrote shortly before the end of his life, is also considered the swan song of the genre: the musical language and humor are so profound and the composer was painfully aware that his era was drawing to a close. As a result, “Don Pasquale” is not without a certain tragedy in the midst of the happy hustle and bustle of the stage: the parade role par excellence for the two much sought-after bassists Donato Di Stefano and João Fernandes, who introduce themselves as new ensemble members of the Oldenburg State Theater.

Don Pasquale, über siebzig, vermögend und von altem Adel, möchte sicher sein, dass seine Erbschaft in gute Hände fällt. Auch würde er sich nur zu gerne mit einer jungen Frau an seiner Seite noch einmal so richtig jugendlich fühlen! Ungeschickterweise legt er sein Schicksal aber ausgerechnet in die Hände eines fragwürdigen „Doktors“ – und wird so zum perfekten Opfer einer trickreich eingefädelten Intrige mit weitreichenden Folgen …

Die populäre Buffooper, die Donizetti kurz vor seinem Lebensende schrieb, gilt auch als Abgesang auf die Gattung: So tiefgründig sind Musiksprache und Humor und so schmerzlich war dem Komponisten bewusst, dass seine Ära sich dem Ende zuneigte. Dadurch entbehrt „Don Pasquale“ inmitten fröhlichen Bühnentrubels nicht einer gewissen Tragik: die Paraderolle schlechthin für die beiden vielgefragten Bassisten Donato Di Stefano und João Fernandes, die sich als neue Ensemblemitglieder des Oldenburgischen Staatstheaters vorstellen.
