The puppet animation Effendi, presented by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, was one of the most popular classical animated films in the 1980s and 1990s. With moustaches and a headscarf, Effendi often rides a little donkey backwards, with full of wisdom, sense of humor and hatred of the evil. Effendi crystallizes the most impassioned childhood memory in the minds of people.

Since 2015, NCPA, which devotes to opera production, has started to make explorations in the realm of children’s opera. Effendi, the second children’s opera commission by NCPA, is based on a well-known folk tale. Adapted from the classical folklore Tale of Effendi: Planting Gold, this children’s opera is characterized by funny storyline, fascinating music and multi-coloured stage effect. This opera was selected as a project subsidized by China National Arts Fund in 2018.

Lord Bayie, a scheming and mercenary guy, is a bloodsucker in nature. With full of cunning tricks, Bayie imposes exactions on other people, and takes advantage of compound interest and other vicious methods to exploit and oppresses hardworking and toiling masses of people. As a result, the poor people cannot endure. At this point, Effendi wanders about this place. In order to help kind-hearted and simple people to enjoy justice, Effendi plays a trick, and makes greedy Lord Bayie and his wife believe in such a miracle that gold can be planted. With excessive desires trapped into the fabulous illusion described by Effendi, Lord Bayie and his wife are bogged down deeper and deeper, finally empty their purse and lose all original capitals. The grabbed money is returned to their original owners. This interesting and humorous tale not only helps the audiences understand the inevitable doom of “malicious persons who make money against the conscience”, but also praises “a wise man who lives a happy life”. Through this opera, the sense of value, i.e., “kindness is a mark of nobility”, is fostered among the teenagers.
