»When I'm in Vienna and walk past the Secession building, I feel the echo of the dawn of modernity, the spirit of the early 20th century. A time associated with names such as Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud. Suddenly something intoxicating invades the culture. Art is the controlled space in which a new, pleasurable view of the world lives out.

We take the audience back to this time when we play works from 1905 to 1920 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The »7 early songs« by Alban Berg, the suite from the incidental music »Much Ado About Nothing« by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and then the short opera A FLORENTINIAN TR AGÖDIE by Alexander von Zemlinsky follows as a conclusion. At that time, all these composers dared to try completely new harmonies and timbres, creating textures that were previously unknown.

This music also radiates a veritable erotomania, especially in Zemlinsky's work. The lyrics are about affairs, love triangles, ecstasy. Also in private life, by the way, Alma Mahler first met Klimt, then Zemlinsky, but also had an affair with Kokoschka. delimitation everywhere. You can feel that in the music too.

The artistic fantasies at that time seemed limitless. The music itself is a ride on a razor blade, sometimes tonal and romantic, sometimes atonal and modern, even in the individual works it often goes back and forth. This is what a time of freedom sounds like!« (Marc Albrecht)

Wenn ich in Wien bin und am Haus der Secession vorbeigehe, spüre ich das Echo des Aufbruchs in die Moderne, den Geist vom Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Eine Zeit, die mit Namen wie Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Albert Einstein und Sigmund Freud verbunden ist. Plötzlich drängt etwas Rauschhaftes in die Kultur. Die Kunst ist der kontrollierte Raum, in dem sich ein neuer, lustvoller Blick auf die Welt auslebt.

In diese Zeit entführen wir das Publikum, wenn wir an der Deutschen Oper Berlin Werke der Jahre 1905 bis 1920 spielen. Die »7 frühen Lieder« von Alban Berg, die Suite aus der Bühnenmusik »Viel Lärm um nichts« von Erich Wolfgang Korngold, und dann folgt als Abschluss die Kurzoper EINE FLORENTINISCHE TR AGÖDIE von Alexander von Zemlinsky. All diese Komponisten wagten sich damals an ganz neue Harmonien und Klangfarben, da entstanden Texturen, die man vorher so gar nicht kannte.

Diese Musik strahlt außerdem eine regelrechte Erotomanie aus, bei Zemlinsky am meisten. Es geht in den Texten um Affären, Dreiecksbeziehungen, Ekstase. Auch im Privatleben übrigens, Alma Mahler etwa kommt erst mit Klimt zusammen, dann mit Zemlinsky, hat aber auch eine Affäre mit Kokoschka. Entgrenzung überall. Das spürt man auch in der Musik.

Die künstlerischen Phantasien damals scheinen grenzenlos. Die Musik selbst ist ein Ritt auf der Rasierklinge, mal tonal und romantisch, mal atonal und modern, das kippt sogar in den einzelnen Werken oft hin und her. So klingt eine Zeit der Freiheit!« (Marc Albrecht)
