In der Einsamkeit eines Berghotels, im Angesicht des todbringenden Gletschereises, dreht sich alles um einen Dichterfürsten, der – krankhaft besorgt um seine Inspiration – eine „Elegie der Liebenden“ verfasst: „Im Wesentlichen geht es um die Geburt eines Gedichtes, dessen Werden wir verfolgen vom ersten Augenblick der ersten Idee bis zum schließlichen Vorlesen. Was sich abspielt um diesen Geburtsprozeß herum an Groteskem, Lächerlichem, Vulgärem, Bösartigem, Gemeinem, dient dazu, die Figur des Künstlers als Helden, dieses Konzept vom Heldenleben, in Frage zu stellen, wie es das 19. Jahrhundert geschaffen und das 20. Jahrhundert noch nicht vollständig losgeworden ist.“ (Henze). Der Komponist und seine Librettisten, die englischen Dichter Wystan Hugh Auden und Chester Simon Kallman, widmeten das Werk „der Erinnerung an Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Österreicher, Europäer und Meisterlibrettist“.

In the solitude of a mountain hotel, in the face of the deadly glacier ice, everything revolves around a poet prince who - morbidly worried about his inspiration - writes an "Elegy of Lovers": "Essentially it's about the birth of a poem whose development we follow from the first moment of the first idea to the final reading. What happens around this birth process in terms of the grotesque, the ridiculous, the vulgar, the malicious, the mean, serves to question the figure of the artist as hero, this concept of the hero's life, as created in the 19th century and the 20th century has not yet been completely eliminated.” (Henze).
