8 minutes, 46 seconds: ever since the brutal killing of the African American George Floyd during a police operation in Minneapolis, this time span has symbolized racist violence. The Swiss Nigerian composer Charles Uzor has worked through his reactions to this event in a nightmarish piece comprising nothing but the sounds of breathing; his new work Catharsis Calculation takes this further. Liza Lim’s new ensemble piece is also about time: about our individual finiteness and about the ecological crisis. The protagonist is a river - a symbol for transience and (endangered) continuity. In a video by Morena Barra, the performer Winnie Huang translates it into sound using two violins, performing on the stage in an interactive dialogue with the film.

8 Minuten, 46 Sekunden: Diese Zeitspanne steht seit der brutalen Ermordung des Afroamerikaners George Floyd bei einem Polizeieinsatz in Minneapolis symbolisch für rassistische Gewalt. Der schweizerisch-nigerianische Komponist Charles Uzor hat das Ereignis in einem beklemmenden Stück allein aus Atemgeräuschen verarbeitet, an das er mit seinem neuen Werk Katharsis Kalkül anknüpft. Um Zeit geht es auch in Liza Lims neuem Ensemblestück: um unsere individuelle Endlichkeit und um die ökologische Krise. Protagonist ist - als Sinnbild für Vergänglichkeit und (gefährdete) Kontinuität - ein Fluss. Performerin Winnie Huang bringt ihn in einem Video von Morena Barra mit zwei Violinen zum Klingen — und tritt auf der Bühne in einen interaktiven Dialog mit diesem Film.
