The most successful and most popular work of Jakov Gotovac's opera E ro from the Other World has long been considered one of the most successful Slavic comic operas, and since its premiere at the Zagreb HNK in 1935 it has hardly left the repertoire of all Croatian national houses. Numerous reviews of performances staged on foreign stages assess the Era as a trademark of Croatian opera, which transmits the songs and dances of its homeland to the world, with the dramatic word and music perfectly combined. Musical color, lush orchestration, lively rhythms, singing vocal lines that flow continuously are closely related to the exceptional libretto by Milan Begović full of witty and ingenious verses. The main character of the opera and the initiator of the plot is Mića, a young man from a rich rural family in the Dalmatian hinterland.
While trying to find a girl to marry, on his mother's advice, he portrays himself as poor, like Ero from the other world, because he wants to be sure that his beloved Đula sincerely loves him. Although he cheated on many, in the end everything is forgiven and he gets the girl he loves. The spectacular ballet finale of the opera, a furious tempo, is a kind of ode to the folk way of life, in which music imbued with the ethnos of the Dalmatian hinterland comes to the fore.
