In flashbacks, “Evita” traces the key stages in the life of Eva Duarte de Perón, who came from a humble background. Born as an illegitimate child in a village in Argentina, she joined the bar singer Magaldi at a young age and moved to Buenos Aires with him. There she worked as a singer and received minor film roles before rising to become First Lady of Argentina alongside statesman Juan Perón. Evita is honored by the poor as a saint for her social commitment, her early death shocks the whole country.

Eva Perón is one of the most fascinating and at the same time not undisputed personalities of the 20th century. A legend during her lifetime, she became a myth after she died of cancer in 1952. Her body only found its final resting place in the La Recoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires after a twenty-year odyssey. Against the background of Evita's dazzling life story, it proves to be a dramaturgical trick when the character of Che - based on the revolutionary Che Guevara - is assigned the role of moral judge in the musical with an equally controversial male myth of the 20th century. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice had their first sensational success in 1971 with "Jesus Christ Superstar", which they were able to build on with "Evita". The song "Don't cry for me
