Ein Mann sitzt im Flugzeug von Rom nach Palermo – nur wenige Stunden vor dem Bombenattentat, das ihn und seine Ehefrau das Leben kosten wird. Es ist Giovanni Falcone, der bekannte Mafia-Untersuchungsrichter, dessen Kampf gegen das organisierte Verbrechen der sizilianischen »Cosa Nostra« 1986 zu einem spektakulären Massenprozess führte, bei dem über 400 Mitglieder der Organisation ihrer Verbrechen angeklagt werden konnten. Während der »angehaltenen Zeit des Fluges« – so der Untertitel der 2007 uraufgeführten Oper von Nicola Sani – verbinden sich die Erlebnisse und Gedanken Falcones mit Erinnerungen und Schilderungen des bevorstehenden Attentats zu einem Mosaik aus Reflektionen über Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft.
Aus Zeitungsartikeln, Justizunterlagen und privaten Briefen Falcones zitierend bildet das Libretto eine Art dokumentarisches »Patchwork«, in dem neben der Titelfigur selbst u. a. auch Politiker, Mafiosi und Journalisten zu Wort kommen.
Die Staatsoper im Schiller Theater zeigt diese Kammeroper von Nicola Sani, einem der derzeit wichtigsten italienischen Gegenwartskomponisten, zu dessen Wegbegleitern u. a. Karlheinz Stockhausen und Luigi Nono zählen, anlässlich des Todestages des titelgebenden Mafia-Richters, der sich im Mai 2017 zum fünfundzwanzigsten Mal jährt.

A man is on a plane from Rome to Palermo just hours before the bomb attack that will take his and his wife's lives. It is Giovanni Falcone, the well-known Mafia investigating magistrate whose fight against the organized crime of the Sicilian "Cosa Nostra" led to a spectacular mass trial in 1986, in which more than 400 members of the organization could be accused of their crimes. During the »stopped time of the flight« – the subtitle of Nicola Sani's opera, which premiered in 2007 – Falcone's experiences and thoughts are combined with memories and descriptions of the impending assassination attempt to form a mosaic of reflections on the past, present and future.
Quoting from newspaper articles, legal documents and Falcone's private letters, the libretto forms a kind of documentary "patchwork" in which, in addition to the title character himself, politicians, mafiosi and journalists also have their say.
The Staatsoper im Schiller Theater is showing this chamber opera by Nicola Sani, currently one of the most important contemporary Italian composers, whose companions include Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luigi Nono, on the occasion of the death of the eponymous mafia judge, who will be celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary in May 2017.
