Falstaff på Malmö opera

Giuseppe Verdi's opera Falstaff is a confusing comedy based mainly on Shakespeare's plays The Cheerful Wives of Windsor and Henry IV. The opera's famous final joint states that everything in the world is one big joke. But can only agree: In these times, it feels as if reality is just as absurd as an opera comedy.

To ensure the safety of the participants, we have been forced to put our original idea for Falstaff, Shakespeare meets Orwell's Animal Farm, on the shelf.

NEW CONCEPT
In record time, director Lotte de Beer and set designer Christof Hetzer have instead worked out a smoky current, completely crazy contemporary comedy with Zoom meetings, TV recordings, emojis and fake news - Shakespeare meets Fox News and Desperate Housewives!

Falstaff is in a contemporary TV studio dressed in a suit, but is just as buffalo, vain, cowardly and unreliable as in Shakespeare's original. And he is just as deceived by the smart women he himself is trying to deceive.

Lotte de Beer was successful in 2018 with a famous The Flying Dutchman here in the house. Recently, she was appointed director of one of Europe's most prestigious opera houses, the Volksoper Wien.

IN THE ROLES
Our Falstaff is the Georgian baritone Misha Kiria, known from Europe's major opera stages: La Scala in Milan, the National Opera in Amsterdam, the Bregenzer Festspiele, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the opera in Madrid, the Barbican Hall in London etc.
