Falstaff - Interview de Barrie Kosky, metteur en scène

Falstaff Falstaff , premiered in 1893 at La Scala, is Verdi's ultimate hero borrowed from Shakespeare. While he imagined Aida as his last score, it was the meeting with Boito, the Italian translator of Shakespeare, that convinced him to continue composing. Verdi was 80 years old when he tackled this highly modern comic masterpiece. Here, neither prelude nor overture, Verdi plunges us directly into an action based on a wide variety of styles and ingenious dramatic discoveries. Without departing from the requirements of theatrical writing, Verdi offers a vocal writing of great richness with its refined melodies and dizzying rhythms.
At the pulpit, the musical director Daniele Rustioni uses his great knowledge of the Italian composer to sublimate the lyricism of the score. A real challenge for its interpreter, the role of Falstaff, here located in an indeterminate space, is one of the summits of the vocal repertoire.
Barrie Kosky, the director, makes him a seducer, gourmet and coquettish, a toxic predator, not without weaknesses, with great contemporary resonance.

Falstaff, créé en 1893 à la Scala, est l'ultime héros de Verdi emprunté à Shakespeare. Alors qu'il imaginait Aida comme sa dernière partition, c'est la rencontre avec Boito, traducteur italien de Shakespeare, qui le convainc de continuer à composer. Verdi a 80 ans quand il s'attèle à ce chef d'œuvre comique d'une grande modernité. Ici, ni prélude, ni ouverture, Verdi nous plonge directement dans une action qui repose sur une grande variété de styles et d'ingénieuses trouvailles dramatiques. Sans se départir des exigences de l'écriture théâtrale, Verdi propose une écriture vocale d'une grande richesse avec ses mélodies raffinées et ses rythmes étourdissants.
Au pupitre, le directeur musical Daniele Rustioni met à profit sa grande connaissance du compositeur italien pour sublimer le lyrisme de la partition. Véritable défi pour son interprète, le rôle de Falstaff, ici situé dans un espace indéterminé, est un des sommets du répertoire vocal.
Barrie Kosky, le metteur en scène, en fait un séducteur, gourmet et coquet, un prédateur toxique, non sans fragilités, à la grande résonance contemporaine.
