"We're having the luckiest toilet flush on the street," Diana Goodman, who has suffered from 16-year bipolar disorder, tells her horrified husband after dumping her mood-boosting medication in the toilet. The courage of Brian Yorkey (lyrics) and Tom Kitt (music) to approach a behind-the-scenes-the-hand subject with gruff humor has paid off. In 2010 they were awarded the Pulitzer Prize (Best Drama) for their musical about a mentally ill suburban mother, and the critics were not sparing in their praise either: in 2009 the musical won eleven Tony Award nominations in three categories (Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, Best Performance by a leading actress in a musical).


The view of the world and the attempts of her doctor, Dr. Fine to treat her through the eyes of Diana, who states that she no longer feels anything because of the medication, while Dr. Fine finally describes his patient as "stable". The duo Yorkey and Kitt have managed to bring the complex pandemonium of illness and codependency to the fore in a musical that embraces all genre conventions and virtues, while never rising above its subject or even its characters.


Rare in German-speaking countries, but then successful on the schedules, the Landestheater Coburg opens its season in the big house with this extraordinary musical highlight, which meets the expectations of a "musical", but at the same time turns them upside down.
