Fiddler on the Roofis one of those musicals that have circulated almost all over the world, and many of its fragments are known to the audience regardless of latitude. Composer Jerry Bock, in the early 1950s, having already produced three successful musicals, was offered by the then management of New York's Imperial Theater to compose a play after which the audience leaving the theater would hum its fragments. In a word - the management asked the composer for a hit that would be unrivaled in comparison to other Broadway theatres. Bock agreed and brought in the collaboration of spoken word writer Joseph Stein and songwriter Sheldon Harnick. The libretto was based on stories by Sholem Aleichem, whose main character is Tewje, his wife, Golde, and their three daughters, Cajtel, Hodel and Chawa, who want to get married. Everything takes place in 1905 in the Russian village of Anatevka, where traditional Jewish society lives together with the Russian community slowly preparing for revolution. The element that binds the whole art is the concept of Tradition passing into modernity personified in the form of Tevye, who is undergoing an internal transformation before our very eyes.
Fiddler on the Roof was first introduced in 1954, almost immediately it began to break all records of popularity and it is so until today, because - as Tevye says - each of us is just such a fiddler on the roof, trying to bring out a cheerful life , sonorous tone without breaking your neck. It's not an easy art! (...) And what allows us, for so many years, to keep balance in this uncomfortable position? I can answer you in one word - Tradition...
