Will man Wichtiges mit möglichst großer Reichweite verkünden, so schickt man in der Regel eine Rundmail. Ist man aber gerade Papst, so nennt sich das Ganze Enzyklika. 1963 richtet sich Johannes XXIII. mit einer Friedensbotschaft nicht bloß an die Kollegen vom Fach, sondern an alle Menschen guten Willens. Nicht von ungefähr, denn die Welt steht mal wieder am Abgrund, ein Atomkrieg droht. Dank des französisch-jüdischen Komponisten Darius Milhaud ist diese Enzyklika Pacem in terris (Friede auf Erden) das erste und einzige päpstliche Rundschreiben, das auch noch vertont wurde. Und wann wäre eine Chor-Sinfonie, die sich für den Frieden in der Welt, für die Achtung und Einhaltung der Menschenrecht stark macht, wichtiger als heute?

Unter dem Eindruck des Ersten Weltkrieges macht sich Max Reger an die Vertonung des Requiems, der lateinischen Totenmesse. Unvollendet bleibt dieses Projekt, Kyrie und Dies irae bringt Reger vor seinem eigenen Tod noch zu Papier. Erst über zwei Jahrzehnte später wird zumindest der erste Satz aufgeführt: im Jahr 1938 und von den Nazis mit einem deutschem Text versehen. Vielleicht bringt uns gerade ein unvollendetes Requiem das Grauen des Krieges, der so viele Menschen aus ihrem Leben reißt, besonders nahe.

If you want to announce something important with as wide a reach as possible, you usually send a circular email. But if you are Pope, the whole thing is called an encyclical. In 1963 John XXIII addressed himself. with a message of peace not only to colleagues in the field, but to all people of good will. Not without reason, because the world is once again on the brink, a nuclear war is imminent. Thanks to the French-Jewish composer Darius Milhaud, this encyclical Pacem in terris (Peace on Earth) is the first and only papal circular that was also set to music. And when would a choral symphony that campaigns for peace in the world, for respect for and observance of human rights, be more important than it is today?

Under the impression of the First World War, Max Reger sets to music the Requiem, the Latin mass for the dead. This project remains unfinished, and Reger put Kyrie and Dies irae on paper before his own death. At least the first sentence is only performed more than two decades later: in 1938 and provided with a German text by the Nazis. Perhaps an unfinished requiem brings us particularly close to the horror of war, which tears so many people out of their lives.
