Throughout his plethora of career, Bach has composed no less than 200 cantatas, almost all for the parish of Leipzig and sometimes at the rate of one per week (!). On the other hand, he did not compose any opera, which Katie Mitchell remedies for him with Nuit funèbre (Trauernacht) . The director has recomposed a musical and scenic dramaturgy from a musical patchwork of extracts from little-known cantatas. From there,  Funeral Night (Trauernacht)presents itself as a secular cantata for five singers and eleven instrumentalists, a meditation on death, which testifies to the range of emotions at work in Bach, between abysmal doubt and the comfort of faith. Working on the psychology of the characters, Mitchell's staging, which had already carried The Passion according to Saint-Matthew on stage , is made of millimeter movements and surgical gestures that support the theatrical dimension of the whole.
