He loves his mistress madly and tries, supported by his wet nurse Margaretha, to use Siegfried's absence to his advantage. In Golo's and Genoveva's joint duet »If I Were a Little Bird«, Golo believes he has reached his goal, but Genoveva rejects him with the words »dishonorable bastard«. Seeking revenge, Golo accuses his mistress of adultery and obtains a death sentence. The execution can be prevented at the last moment by Siegfried's return.
