Milan 1845: With "Giovanna d'Arco", his seventh opera, Giuseppe Verdi achieves a great public success at the premiere at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The day after the premiere he writes enthusiastically that it is "without exception and without a doubt the best" of his previous operas. However, Verdi does not agree with the staging, which leads to a long-standing quarrel with the Scala director.

The dramma lirico in a prologue and three acts deals with the life of Joan of Arc (Johanna von Orléans). The libretto was written by Temistocle Solera, who had already written the librettos to "Oberto", "Nabucco" and "I Lombardi" for Verdi; "Attila" follows a year after "Giovanna d'Arco".
Solera uses the tragedy "The Maid of Orléans" by Friedrich Schiller, with which Verdi sets the first of his Schiller operas to music. "I Masnadieri" (The Robbers), "Luisa Miller" (after "Intrigue and Love") and "Don Carlos" follow.
The figure of Giovanna is dominant throughout the piece, and Verdi demands the finest vocal ornamentation techniques typical of his early compositional phase. Possibly "Giovanna d'Arco" was initially intended as a choral tableau, but the composer changed the emphasis in favor of the vocal artistry of the premiere's prima donna, Erminia Frezzolini.
