Jacob and his parents live by the sea. However, they are so poor that they cannot even afford shoes or even a house. But one day when Jacob goes fishing with his father, Jacob catches a special fish. He'll fulfill his every wish if he just lets him live. The first thing Jacob wants is a pair of new shoes, but when his parents find out about the fish, his wishes become bigger and bigger: a house, a castle with staff, vacation trips, a palm beach! However, this is not without consequences, because the greater the greed, the thinner the fish and the wilder the sea ... In »Gold!« Leonard Evers imaginatively sets Grimm's fairy tale »The Fisherman and His Wife« to music. A poetic and profound children's opera about poverty, pride and the happiness of being content.

Jacob und seine Eltern leben am Meer. Allerdings sind sie so arm, dass sie sich nicht einmal Schuhe oder gar ein Haus leisten können. Doch als Jacob eines Tages mit seinem Vater zum Angeln geht, fängt Jacob einen besonderen Fisch. Der erfüllt ihm jeden Wunsch, wenn er ihn denn nur am Leben lässt. Jacob wünscht sich als erstes ein Paar neuer Schuhe, doch als die Eltern von dem Fisch erfahren, werden die Wünsche immer größer und maßloser: ein Haus, ein Schloss mit Personal, Urlaubsreisen, Palmenstrand! Allerdings bleibt dies nicht ohne Folgen, denn je größer die Gier wird, desto dünner wird der Fisch und desto wilder das Meer … Leonard Evers fasst in »Gold!« Grimms Märchen »Vom Fischer und seiner Frau« fantasievoll in Musik. Eine poetische und tiefsinnige Kinderoper über Armut, Hochmut und das Glück, zufrieden sein zu können.
