The Wars of Rosemary and Marjoram, by António José da Silva (1705-1739) and António Teixeira (1707-1774), is a Joco-Séria Opera, which was performed for the first time at the Bairro Alto Theater in Lisbon, at the carnival of 1737.

It is a masterpiece of Portuguese theater and music and of crucial importance in our culture. Músicos do Tejo is now presenting a new version of the concert, but which will focus on text and theatrical play.

In this « opera in Portuguese taste » (as this genre of theater spoken in Portuguese was called at the time and with various musical numbers sung with orchestral accompaniment), we find a perfect balance between the comicity of the text, characters and situations; literary and musical beauty; as well as the pace of development and structuring of the work. Its tone is always varying between multiple layers: grotesque, sublime, dramatic, pastoral, satirical, among others that blend in a style that, at times, is rich in something that, intuitively, we call "castiço", even if that word with so much meaning for the Portuguese, is, deep down, so mysterious.

We don't want to reveal the story too much, but we can say that the plot revolves around young people who want to unite despite the opposition of a tutor accustomed to the most conservative difficulties. The context is that of the extended theatrical family that we always find in 18th-century theatre, in which the house's owners are joined by the always ingenious and quick servants to propose intriguing solutions and the respective outcome. – Marcos Magalhães and Marta Araújo
