A story over two centuries old is the basis for Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy tale opera "Hansel and Gretel". Two siblings get lost in the forest and meet an evil witch who is up to no good with them. In her production, the director Victoria Stevens focuses on the family situation of the Besenbinders: money worries and a lack of prospects are the order of the day. But Hansel and Gretel have wishes and dreams that drive them to leave their parents' home. The boundless world of fantasy guides the siblings' way into the magical forest. In place of the wrinkled witch in the Knusperhäuschen, director Victoria Stevens has put a new idea of ​​the child's place of longing that reveals her South African origins. 

From folk songs to the mysterious, sparkling musical language of the late romantic era, Humperdinck finds exactly the right tone for this fairy tale - an ideal template for the imaginative staging by Victoria Stevens and the magical visual worlds of the Austrian video artist Judith Selenko, which are created by a mixture of hand-made drawings and graffiti aesthetics , Collage technique and 3D animations invite the audience to dream.
