The well-known fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel was the basis for Engelbert Humperdinck's opera, which has been one of the most frequently performed works on the opera stage since its premiere in 1893. For the first time in 1812 in the Children's and Household Talesby the Brothers Grimm, it has been taken up and reinterpreted by numerous artists over the centuries. For many, Humperdinck's musical version is one of the most successful ever. The composer integrated a few simple children's and folk songs into his artistic late-Romantic score and thereby created captivatingly beautiful music such as the "Abendsegen". The characters in the opera go beyond the silhouette-like fairy tale characters: the children are not abandoned by their parents, but are sent into the forest by an overwhelmed and exhausted mother.
