Engelbert Humperdinck's HANSEL UND GRETEL has been one of the most popular operas for the whole family for over 100 years. Traditionally performed around Christmas, the work was initially considered a "family evil" by the Humperdinck family. Adelheid Wette, the composer's sister, wrote a fairy tale play for her children based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm and asked her brother to set some of the songs to music. The play, known in the family jargon of the Wagner enthusiast Humperdinck as a »nursery consecration play«, was to be performed on the occasion of his father's birthday. What saw the light of day in 1890 as a piano version was completed three years later by the composer as a grand opera. Humperdinck could not resist the temptation to transform the work with its catchy melodies and the story, which is not only dramatic for children, into a two-hour symphonic masterpiece. It has been translated into over twenty languages ​​and is still the first encounter with the world of opera for many children today.

Musically, the demanding work does not hide its closeness to Wagner, but is also able to cast a spell over untrained ears. Andreas Homoki and his stage designer Wolfgang Gussmann tell the story in a child-friendly and straightforward way. They contrast the opulence of the music with lightness and poetic imagery, which reaches its magical climax in the night scenes in the forest. Of course, there is also drama and theatrical scary effects, and the appearance of the witch, which is eagerly awaited by all children, is staged in an exciting, but not without comedy way. Even children from around eight years of age can enjoy Humperdinck's fairy tale play, in which the fight against evil is won at the end and Hansel and Gretel, through their courage and ingenuity, not only transformed themselves, but also all the others from the witch into gingerbread Show children the way to freedom.

Inzwischen haben Hänsel und Gretel ihre Körbchen gefüllt, aber vor lauter Hunger alle Beeren selbst verspeist. Als sie neue suchen wollen, merken sie, dass es bereits dunkel geworden ist. Sie haben sich im Wald verirrt. Sie beschließen, sich schlafen zu legen und sprechen ihr Abendgebet. Im Traum erleben sie wunderbare Dinge. Am nächsten Morgen finden sie sich vor einem seltsamen Haus aus Lebkuchen und Zuckerzeug wieder. Als sie davon naschen wollen, erscheint plötzlich die Hexe und nimmt sie gefangen. Hänsel soll im Ofen gebraten werden, doch durch eine List gelingt es den Kindern, statt dessen die Hexe in den Ofen zu stoßen. Im selben Augenblick weicht der Zauber, und all die vielen Kinder, die schon vorher durch die Hexe in Lebkuchen verwandelt wurden, erhalten ihre Gestalt wieder und werden befreit. Als dann auch die Eltern erscheinen, ist die Familie endlich wieder vereint. Glücklich gehen sie nach Hause.

Seit über 100 Jahren gehört Engelbert Humperdincks HÄNSEL UND GRETEL zu den beliebtesten Opern für die ganze Familie. Traditionell um Weihnachten herum aufgeführt, galt das Werk im Kreise der Familie Humperdinck zunächst als »Familienübel«. Adelheid Wette, die Schwester des Komponisten, hatte für ihre Kinder ein Märchenspiel nach dem gleichnamigen Märchen der Brüder Grimm verfasst und ihren Bruder gebeten, einige Lieder daraus zu vertonen. Das Stück, im Familienjargon des Wagner-Enthusiasten Humperdinck ein »Kinderstuben-Weihfestspiel« genannt, sollte anlässlich des Geburtstages des Vaters aufgeführt werden. Was 1890 als Klavierversion das Licht der Welt erblickte, wurde drei Jahre später vom Komponisten als große Oper vollendet. Humperdinck hatte der Versuchung nicht widerstehen können, das Werk mit seinen eingängigen Melodien und der nicht nur für Kinder dramatischen Geschichte in ein zweistündiges sinfonisches Meisterwerk zu verwandeln. Es wurde in über zwanzig Sprachen übersetzt und bedeutet auch heute noch für viele Kinder die erste Begegnung mit der Welt der Oper.

Musikalisch verbirgt das anspruchsvolle Werk seine Nähe zu Wagner nicht, vermag aber auch ungeübtere Ohren in seinen Bann zu ziehen. Geschickt platzierte »Evergreens« wie Ein Männlein steht im Walde, Abends wenn ich schlafen geh’, vierzehn Englein um mich stehn oder Der kleine Sandmann bin ich helfen bei der Orientierung und bleiben noch lange nach Verlöschen der Bühnenlichter in Erinnerung.

Andreas Homoki und sein Bühnenbildner Wolfgang Gussmann erzählen die Geschichte kindergerecht und geradlinig. Der Opulenz der Musik setzen sie Leichtigkeit und eine poetische Bildersprache entgegen, die vor allem in den Nachtszenen im Wald ihren zauberhaften Höhepunkt erreicht. Natürlich fehlen auch Dramatik und theaterwirksame Gruseleffekte nicht, und der von allen Kindern sehnsüchtig erwartete Auftritt der Hexe wird spannend, aber nicht ohne Komik inszeniert. Schon Kinder ab etwa acht Jahren haben ihre Freude an Humperdincks Märchenspiel, in dem am Ende der Kampf gegen das Böse gewonnen wird und Hänsel und Gretel durch ihren Mut und ihren Einfallsreichtum nicht nur sich selbst, sondern auch all den anderen von der Hexe in Lebkuchen verwandelten Kindern den Weg in die Freiheit zeigen.
