Even during his lifetime he was considered the "father of our modern music": Heinrich Schütz, organist and conductor at the Saxon court, but above all a gifted composer. Born in Köstritz, his musical education took him to Venice, where he apprenticed with the organist Giovanni Gabrieli. From there he brought the Italian style with obbligato thoroughbass back to Germany and thus established a new German musical tradition.

350 years after Schütz's death, this concert with the chamber choir of the Singakademie Cottbus eV, the Bach Consort Cottbus and soloists of the Staatstheater brings together an autumnal bouquet with honorary gifts for the master of the early baroque. The "Canzon primi toni" for eight voices by his teacher Gabrieli are also represented, as well as one of Schütz's own compositions and "Gott hilf mir" by Dietrich Buxtehude. The musicians, conducted by Christian Möbius, close the top-class festival concert with "Create in me, God, a pure heart" by the tradition-conscious Johannes Brahms.

Schon zu Lebzeiten galt er als „Vater unserer modernen Musik“: Heinrich Schütz, seines Zeichens Organist und Kapellmeister am sächsischen Hof, vor allem aber begnadeter Komponist. Seine musikalische Ausbildung führte den gebürtigen Köstritzer bis nach Venedig, wo er beim Organisten Giovanni Gabrieli in die Lehre ging. Den italienischen Stil mit obligatem Generalbass brachte er von dort nach Deutschland zurück und begründete damit eine neue deutsche Musiktradition.

350 Jahre nach Schütz‘ Tod versammelt dieses Konzert mit dem Kammerchor der Singakademie Cottbus e.V., dem Bach Consort Cottbus und Solist*innen des Staatstheaters einen herbstlichen Strauß mit Ehrengaben für den Meister des Frühbarock. Die „Canzon primi toni“ zu acht Stimmen seines Lehrers Gabrieli sind ebenso vertreten wie eine Schütz’sche Eigenkomposition und „Gott hilf mir“ von Dietrich Buxtehude. Mit „Schaffe in mir, Gott, ein rein Herz“ des traditionsbewussten Johannes Brahms beschließen die Musiker*innen unter Leitung von Christian Möbius das hochkarätige Festkonzert.
