For many years Hercules plied the unruly seas and vanquished the most terrifying creatures of Greek mythology; he was revered as a hero of mankind and had a hit with women - and it is ultimately they who prepare his deathbed all too soon. After thirty years of tireless commitment to Italian opera, Handel devoted his entire creative energy to the English oratorio from 1741 until he turned to an operatic subject again in 1744 with Hercules. The story takes on a highly unusual perspective. From the point of view of Hercules' wife Dejanira, the events surrounding the return and the surprising death of the "conqueror of mankind" are described. Director and set designer Nigel Lowery unfolds a universe between love and jealousy around her pathological mental states. Bernhard Forck, concert master of the Berlin Academy for Early Music and musical director of the Handel Festival Orchestra in Halle, is responsible for the specifically Handelian orchestral sound. www.nationaltheater-mannheim.de
