Negli ultimi giorni del 1829 Bellini si trovava a Venezia per curare l’allestimento di un’opera in scena alla Fenice. Trovandosi, però, il Teatro Veneziano in emergenza per via di un’imprevista inadempienza da parte di un altro compositore, la presidenza del teatro, l’impresario e l’intera città si diedero a pregare Bellini perché scrivesse lui un’opera al posto del collega. Fu così che in un mese e mezzo Bellini compose I Capuleti e i Montecchi sul libretto di Felice Romani, che si prestava già perfettamente alla compagnia di canto scritturata dalla Fenice per quella stagione.

In the last days of 1829 Bellini was in Venice to oversee the staging of an opera staged at the Fenice. However, since the Venetian Theater was in an emergency due to an unforeseen default by another composer, the presidency of the theatre, the impresario and the entire city began to beg Bellini to write an opera instead of the colleague. So it was that in a month and a half Bellini composed I Capuleti ei Montecchi on the libretto by Felice Romani, which already lent itself perfectly to the singing company hired by La Fenice for that season.
